Deschamps, who captained France to their 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 triumphs, succeeds his former Les Bleus team-mate Laurent Blanc, who stepped down as manager following Euro 2012.
The French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed the appointment in a brief statement and said Deschamps would be unveiled on Monday.
"Noel Le Graet, FFF president, and Didier Deschamps have finished their talks and have reached an agreement for the appointment of Mr Deschamps as coach of the France team," the FFF statement read.
